Can you fix crystallised maple syrup?
If you’ve noticed your maple syrup has crystallised a little, rest assured that this is completely normal.
The sugar crystals are harmless sucrose crystals that have separated from the liquid over time. Crystals are completely natural, and they do not mean that the syrup has gone bad.
Your syrup is still safe to eat and, what’s more, you can easily remove the crystals and enjoy a completely smooth sweetener.
The first method does not even require you to open the bottle of syrup. This article will walk you through the basic steps.
Reheating methods
Warm water bath
The first way of doing this does not even require you to open the bottle of syrup. Simply place the glass bottle into a small pot of simmering water and wait. After a few minutes, you will see that the crystals have fully dissolved.
Stovetop pan
You can see the process more clearly if you pour the syrup into a small saucepan to reheat it. Add a few teaspoons of water and heat the syrup gently. Ensure that you stay at the stove and don’t stop stirring.
Microwave
If you want to choose the ultimate easy fix, you can always put the bottle in the microwave. Heat it safely in short 20 to 30-second bursts and stir in a splash of warm water if needed.
Some words of warning – if the syrup isn’t in a glass bottle, you must transfer it to a microwave-safe container first. If the syrup is microwaved in the bottle, you should stir it at regular intervals to ensure it is heated evenly.
Prevention and storage
There are measures you can take to avoid your maple syrup crystallising.
Firstly, maintain an airtight seal by keeping the cap closed tightly to stop air from drying out the liquid inside. Secondly, cool storage is essential once your bottle is opened. Placing it in the fridge will slow down sugar separation.
