Canadian maple syrup fundraiser gifts $10,000 to local healthcare

A charity initiative in the Canadian state of Ontario has generated almost $20,000, and it’s all in the name of locally made 100% pure maple syrup.

The Rotary Club of Wellington has confirmed it will donate a $10,000 share of proceeds from its yearly Maple Syrup Fundraiser to the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) Foundation.

Community efforts included earnings from maple syrup sales, as well as the proceeds from an annual dinner, dance and auction.

Nancy Parks is the chairperson of the PECMH’s Back the Build Campaign. It’s an initiative to build a new, modern hospital in Prince Edward County. Speaking to Quinte News, she explained how maple syrup had offered a way to foster a community spirit.

She told the publication:

“Every bottle of maple syrup purchased represents neighbours helping neighbours, and we are incredibly grateful for Rotary’s unwavering partnership. Their support has touched countless patients over the years and will continue to do so for generations to come.”

The Fundraiser, which is organised by local volunteers, was based around maple syrup from Nyman Farms; one of several family maple farms in Prince Edward County; known for its high-quality product.

Production in the area peaks during the early spring freeze-thaw cycle. This lasts from late February through to April, which is also a typical time for maple syrup events to be held. Prince Edward County holds its Maple Syrup Festival throughout the month of March, when visitors can sample some of the best maple syrup on the planet, and many local cafes and shops promote maple syrup-themed menus.
