Cult comedians call time on ‘maple syrup chugging’

A much-loved comedy troupe will not repeat an activity that contributed to their cult status – drinking natural maple syrup straight from the bottle!

The first Super Troopers film was released in 2001, and included ‘the diner scene’, which saw two police officers competing in a maple syrup chugging contest.

Now, 25 years on, with the cult movie having made millions on VHS and DVD, members of its cast have explained that they are too old to re-enact the classic scene.

Jay Chandrasekhar, who also directed the film, explained that ‘downing’ maple syrup as fast as possible is hardly a sensible activity that they are keen to repeat:

“We’ve only done it once since. It’s not a good idea. It’s not a healthy choice.”

Co-star Steve Lemme chimed in, revealing that there had been some pressure to return to their syrup guzzling days:

“We’ll go and do things like interviews or talk shows. You walk in the room and every now and then you see a few bottles of maple syrup and your heart starts to sink.”

The type of contests that will be more familiar to fans of the sweet sap evaluate maple syrup for its flavour, density, clarity and colour. Typically held during the maple syrup season around February to April, notable events include Canada’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair held in Toronto, and the Vermont Maple Festival in the northeastern American state.

Judged maple syrup contests are not a new concept. Competitions among producers have been held since the early 20th century.
