Recipe guru shares brown rice oats idea
Combining maple syrup and oats is a winning breakfast combo familiar to people the world over. With brown rice thrown in, we have a morning meal that’s far from ordinary.
Horchata-inspired overnight oats with maple syrup and brown rice is the latest breakfast recipe suggestion from Anna Porter, a Test Kitchen Fellow at People Inc. Food Studios, 40,000-square-foot culinary and media production facility located in the US state of Alabama.
Taking her cues from Horchata, the creamy, plant-based cold drink made from rice mixed with water, that is enjoyed in Mexico and Latin America, Porter has created a concoction that combines brown grains with oats, almond milk, Greek yogurt, cinnamon and salt, along with the much loved breakfast sweetener that is 100% pure maple syrup.
Porter advised:
“An overnight soak softens the oats and rice while allowing the warm cinnamon flavour to infuse throughout. Top with sliced almonds and an extra sprinkle of cinnamon for an easy make-ahead breakfast.”
Like maple syrup, brown rice has a low glycaemic index, meaning that it raises blood sugar more slowly than white rice. It has been linked to health benefits such as improved digestion. Brown rice also shares some of the same vitamins and minerals as maple syrup, including manganese and calcium.
Several ingredients in the Horchata-inspired oats recipe are interchangeable with alternatives. For example, it may be preferable to use dairy milk or soy milk instead of almond milk. Furthermore, yogurt is not considered obligatory.
