Washing organic food ‘still necessary’ according to food expert
While herbicides and fungicides may be less of a concern with organic fruit and vegetables, it is still absolutely essential that they are washed thoroughly before consuming – that’s the warning that has been issued by nutritionist Jessica Shand.
A contributor to publications such as Vogue, Grazia and the Daily Telegraph, Shand is known for her nourishing, science-backed meal plans and food suggestions that support hormonal balance. The food creator has shared numerous meals and recipes featuring the use of maple syrup.
Now, the expert has weighed in on whether it is still necessary to wash organic fruit and vegetables thoroughly, despite the absence of chemicals such as herbicides and fungicides.
Speaking to the Vogue Adria media platform, she explained:
“Toxin exposure is less of a concern with organic fruit and vegetables, but these products are still transported, handled and exposed to other potential contaminants, so it is best to wash absolutely everything before eating it.”
Organic Canadian maple syrup is a product that consumers need have no concerns about in relation to the presence of unknown chemicals. National law dictates that no artificial additives, synthetic chemicals or pesticides should be used in production, and maple farmers are also prohibited from using chemical fertilisers. During the boiling process, maple syrup producers are restricted to natural defoamers such as organic safflower oil.
Shand went on to highlight common misconceptions about labels such as ‘washed’ or ‘ready to eat’ that are typically seen on salad bags. She alerted consumers to the possibility that the salads may be washed with potentially toxic chemicals, meaning it is essential to rinse off any remnants before preparing.
