Baked Churros with Salted Maple Caramel Sauce Recipe

If you love the balance of sweet and salty, this baked churros recipe delivers exactly that. Traditional Spanish churros are paired with a rich salted maple caramel sauce made using pure maple syrup. It is indulgent, comforting, and ideal for sharing.

This recipe makes around 40 churros. They are suitable for freezing and can be reheated after defrosting.

  1. Preheat the oven to 200C, or 180C fan, Gas Mark 6. Line two large baking trays with parchment paper.
  2. Place the water, butter, maple syrup and salt into a large saucepan over a medium heat. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  3. Reduce the heat to low, add the flour, and whisk continuously until a smooth dough forms. Cook for one minute, then remove from the heat.
  4. Whisk the eggs and gradually add them to the dough, stirring until smooth and elastic. Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle.
  5. Pipe the churros onto the prepared trays, leaving space between each one. Cut the ends using scissors or a knife.
  6. Bake for 18 minutes, then turn off the oven and leave the churros inside for a further 10 to 12 minutes to brown.
  7. While the churros bake, place all the caramel sauce ingredients except the salt into a saucepan over a high heat. Bring to the boil, whisking occasionally.
  8. Reduce the heat and continue whisking for around 10 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon. Remove from the heat and season with salt to taste.
  9. Mix the cinnamon and sugar together in a shallow bowl. Brush the warm churros lightly with maple syrup, then roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  10. Serve warm with the salted maple caramel sauce for dipping.
