Sweet and Sour Chicken Recipe

Our sweet and sour chicken is a family favourite meal and so easy to make, perfectly crispy chicken in a delicious tangy and sweet sauce.

Ingredients

  • 500g chicken breast
  • 85g corn starch
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • Sunflower oil, for frying

Sweet and Sour Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon sunflower oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 140ml red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 4 tablespoons ketchup

  • 125ml Pure Maple Syrup, Dark Robust
  • Chilli flakes, optional

Garnish

  • 1 spring onion, finely chopped
  • Sesame seeds, optional
  • Noodles for 4 servings

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas Mark 6.
  2. Cut the chicken into bite size pieces. In a bowl, add the corn starch, salt and pepper. In another bowl, beat the eggs.
Coat the chicken pieces in the corn starch mixture, covering completely. Set aside the remaining corn starch.
  3. Heat a shallow pan with enough oil to cover the chicken pieces. Dip each floured chicken piece in the beaten egg,
then place into the hot oil. Brown on one side, then carefully turn to brown the other side. Cook in batches.
Transfer the chicken to a baking tray and cook in the oven until completely cooked, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Mix the sauce ingredients in a bowl, excluding the spring onions, and whisk. Heat a wok and cook the sauce until the pepper is tender.
Take a little sauce out and mix with 1 tablespoon of corn starch, then stir it back into the wok to thicken.
  5. Cook the noodles according to the packet instructions.
  6. Add the cooked chicken to the sauce.
  7. Serve with chopped spring onions.
